SEEDS OF HOPE Trusting God For Growth
Mark 4:1-20
 When God's Word takes root, God produces a harvest beyond what we could manufacture ourselves.
  
I. SOWING — God's Word Is Given (vv. 1–3, 14)
 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.”
 The Word must be faithfully sown. 
The farmer is responsible for sowing, but the farmer doesn't create the seed. God provides the Word.
 Key Thought: Our responsibility is to sow; God's Word is the seed. II. SOIL — God's Word Is Received (vv. 4–9, 15–2) “Some fell along the path (v.4)…some fell on rocky places (v. 5)…others seed fell among thorns (v.7) …still other seed fell on good soil (v.8).”

The Word must be received.  In this case, the seed falls on four different kinds of ground.  

  • Hard soil — rejects it

  • Shallow soil — receives it temporarily

  • Thorny soil — receives it but allows other things to choke it

  • Good soil — hears, receives, and bears fruit


Key Thought:  The problem is never the seed (word of God) ; the question is the integrity & condition of the soil (heart). III. STRUGGLE — God's Word Is Tested (vv. 4–7, 15–19)

Jesus identifies the forces working against spiritual growth:  

  • Satan steals the Word (v.15)

  • Suffering exposes shallow roots (v.16-17)

  • Stuff—the cares, riches, and desires of this (v. 18-19) world—chokes the Word.


The Word must be sustained through opposition.  Life is not simply hear the word and then automatically grow.  There is a spiritual battle surrounding the Word and hearers are participants to battle and protect.  

Key Thought: A seed may be planted in the soil, but it must survive the struggle to produce fruit. IV. SUCCESS / HARVEST / FRUITFULNESS — God's Word Is Fruitful (vv. 8, 20)

“Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown (v. 20).” 

God's Word produces fruit beyond the initial planting.

Key Thoughts:  When God's Word takes root, God produces a harvest beyond what we could manufacture ourselves.  The fruit is evidence that the Word has genuinely taken root. 

CONCLUSION:  

We cannot manufacture the harvest. But we can faithfully sow the seed, prepare our hearts, remove what chokes the Word, and trust God to bring forth fruit.

When God's Word is faithfully sown, genuinely received, patiently sustained through struggle, it produces a surprising surplus of fruit. As part of your new beginning, how would you guard your heart and how would you respond to God’s word?   What is the new thing that God wants to produce in you?
